     Cycling has become more popular over the years and is recognized in the Olympics for Road, Mountain Bike Racing, Triathlons and BMX racing. Regardless of what your goals are, whether you want to ride at your leisure, participate in local fundraisers, or competing in fast racing events, there is a spot for you. Road and Mountain Bike racing are governed by USA cycling, located in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

     Century rides are organized recreational rides that offer several routes along with rest stops every 10-20 miles. Each rider determines the distance they wish to travel. There is usually a mass start in the morning and you ride at your own pace, or in a pack of riders. Each rest stop contains drinks, food, and restrooms. Routes vary from century to century, but typically are 30, 50, 60, 70, and 100 miles. The best advice about century rides is not to attempt a distance that you are not ready for. Don't attempt the 100 mile route if you haven't been riding regularly. Be sure to wear proper head gear, clothing and inspect your bicycle weeks before the century to ensure it is working properly.

     Fundraiser rides are basically the same as a century, with the exception that they benefit a designated charity (Cancer Society, MS150, Diabetes Assoc., etc.). Some of these rides are just one-day events, some are two-day events. Just like century rides, you ride at your own pace and rest stops are offered along the route.

     USA Cycling is the governing organization for all Road Racing events. USA Cycling official web site is www.usacycling.org. USA Cycling will provide all information on rules of Road Racing, applying for a license, issuing permits for racing events, and assigning qualified racing officials to ensure safe and enjoyable events.
